Further along the coast from the Shriven Imperium lies a rocky stretch of coastal river valleys overdrawn with a magic that imbues, protects, and enshrouds the region. The spirits dwell more closely to the mortal realm than anywhere else on the continent. The folk have formed a modern language, probably derivative of the syllable patterns seen in Conorodon and Irimoidil, where the third syllable is j-influenced and a semi-reduplicated syllable is added.
Today’s word is Storm. An old and modest lighthouse stands sentinel on the farthest outcropping of a rocky island, home to birds and birdfolk, some of considerable size and heft while retaining the ability to fly. The lighthouse keepers have kept the flame lit for thousands of years, or so they claim, bringing in fuel and training their successors through war and hardship.
What can be found or done here
Annals of the ancient world, natural defenses, hardy and unorthodox methods of combat.
Today’s word is Perfume. The shipbuilders on this jutting peninsula are some of the greatest in the world, and they maintain a strong trading hub that imports spices and transforms them into scents that go back into the world and can be found multiple continents away.
What can be found or done here
Show off a new scent or acquire an old one.
Today’s word is Vintage. The forbidden island of Ennadjojo once held a thriving civilization, but it has been many centuries since all but the bravest dared set foot on its cliffs. Rumors of ruins and plunder abound, but no one returns from the death that stalks the past.
What can be found or done here
Only death, or perhaps a route to what lies beyond.
The residents of the deep fjord are fishfolk who came here long ago, fleeing crimes committed by their ancestors in far-off (or not-so-far-off) realms. They maintain island towns, shore towns, undersea towns, and cave towns, and they are proud of their mastery of arcane magics.
What can be found or done here
Go undersea spelunking, farm for magic from the sea.
Today’s word is Underground. A race of sentient salamanders has always dwelled within the holy mountain, and their communities spread through many adjacent rivers and cave systems, sharing knowledge, wealth, and culture. They are friendly, and cannot be roused to anger; those who attempt to war with them instead quickly find themselves in drinking contests and bar games.
What can be found or done here
Have a good time, get lost for a few months but come out of the caves just fine.
Today’s word is Strong. The people of the valleys are incredibly diverse, but none is as different as the supposedly sentient rockfolk who dwell on and around a river island, spending most of their time motionless in meditation. Those who make the mistake of thinking they are inert can suffer incessant psychic nightmares as the displaced being demands to be returned to its precise home.
What can be found or done here
Seek out the meaning of life amongst the rocks.
Today’s word is Light. The eastern valleys, away from the larger mountains, see the most light, and so it is common to see the great flat turtles sunning themselves. They do not speak, either with words or with their minds, but they clearly possess great intelligence, along with nearly impenetrable shells.
What can be found or done here
Wander the glades with wary feet, and do not risk attempting to kill one of the great turtles.
Frost is uncommon in the valleys, except around the slopes of a reverse volcano that expels huge bursts of ice, fog, snow, and hail. Scientists from both the nearby valleys and from far away have gathered to study its function, leading to the presence of several leading academies and universities along the slopes of the mountain.
What can be found or done here
Strange weather, strange learning, strange arcanists.
Today’s word is Bloom. The massive Sunflower groves of the eastern rushes sometimes outshine their namesake itself. Tended by walking plant-creatures that sometimes are indistinguishable from the flowers themselves, the magic runs fierce and strong and beautiful alongside the crystal-clear waters.
What can be found or done here
Biodiversity, flower groves, the purest water in the world.
Today’s word is Explode. In the west lives an incredibly strange species of bumblebee. They start ordinary in size, and migrate east from valley to valley, living what seems like ordinary bumble lives. After they gather the sunflower pollen of Yeyejejeje, they make the arduous journey back to their home valley, where they grow in size and explode like popped corn, spreading their eggs far and wide to perpetuate the species. Because of all the exploding, very few dare live nearby.
What can be found or done here
Exploding. Bumble. Bees.
